Four Suicide Deaths a Day: Why We Need to Talk About Suicide in Kenya

According to a Kenya Ministry of Health policy brief citing WHO (World Health Organization) estimates, approximately four people die by suicide in Kenya every day.

Behind every number is a person.

A family.A friend.A community left asking questions.

Suicide is not simply a conversation about death. It is a conversation about pain, distress, isolation and the support people can access when they are struggling.

Silence Can Make Things Harder

Many people experiencing suicidal thoughts do not always say, “I need help.”

They may withdraw.

They may stop engaging with people around them.

They may appear tired, overwhelmed or unusually quiet.

Sometimes, they may continue going to work, caring for their families and doing everything expected of them.

That is why simply asking, “How are you really doing?” can matter.

Talking About Suicide Does Not Encourage It

A common concern is that asking someone about suicide may put the idea in their head.

It does not.

A compassionate conversation can give someone an opportunity to say what they have been carrying.

You do not need to have the perfect words.

Listen without judgement.

Take what they say seriously.

Stay connected.

And help them access professional support.

Suicide prevention is not only about what happens during a crisis.

It is also about creating spaces where people can speak about pain, hopelessness and mental health before they reach that point.

The conversation may feel uncomfortable.

Have it anyway.
